Fantasies

"If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal,
you become something else entirely."
-Batman Begins

I was watching a movie last night and this stayed with me. As you start to read the message, think about how you would relate this to your life, career, business even in relationships. It takes quite an open mind and an open heart for a person to fully grasp the whole meaning of the message.

"Fantasies must be unrealistic. Because the moment you get what you want you cease to exist, you don't want it anymore. It's not the 'it' that you want it's the fantasy of it. To exist, desire needs absent objects. So desire supports itself with crazy fantasies. This is what Pascal means when he says the only time we're truly happy is when day-dreaming about of future happiness. Or why we say, 'The hunt is sweeter than the kill' or 'Be careful what you wish for.' Not because you'll get it, but because you're doomed not to want it if you do.

Living by your wants will never make you happy, what it means to be fully human is to strive to live by ideas and ideals and not to measure your life by what you ever attain in terms of your desires, but those small moments of integrity, compassion, rationality, even self-sacrifice.”
